Outbid in the Baby Boom

Economists will have to explain it, but if we were to judge by Hillary Clinton and Vladimir Putin, an American tot is worth only half as much as a Russian.

Speaking at a forum hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus last Friday, Sen. Clinton proposed that every child born in the United States get a $5,000 "baby bond" from the government to help pay for future college costs or buying a home.

But Russian President Putin has been giving couples with more than one child $10,000 vouchers to pay for education or home repairs.

Last year, the Democratic Presidential front runner was talking about $1,000 on the installment plan--$500 at birth, followed by $500 at age 10.

According to AP, Britain launched a similar program in January 2005, handing out vouchers worth hundreds of dollars to parents with children born after Sept. 1, 2002.

Any more bidders? Do I hear $11,000?
